The meeting is by invitation only, and open to the RIfS SSG members, WCRP secretariat representative, IPO staff, JSC liaisons, designates of GEP, CORDEX, and RIfS’ working groups, and a limited set of other invitees.

Preparation Documents:

Travel information

  • Venue: the meeting will take place at the Calders Hotel and Conference venue in Cape Town.

  • Upon arrival at the airport you can use one of the airport’s approved shuttle services which you will find inside the terminal, or you can use an Uber. Uber services are generally very reliable. You can also arrange a shuttle through the hotel.
  • Hotel: The venue has onsite accommodation. We have blocked rooms for our meeting, but it is your responsibility to make your own reservation.

Catering

Teas and lunches will be provided for the meeting. Please let us know of any dietary requirements, if you have not already done so.

Communication

There are a number of mobile service providers in South Africa; Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C. All these companies have cheap SIM cards for sale in many shops and can be purchased at the airport.

Plugs

You will need an adapter to be able to use the SA plugs – there are two types – one with 3 round prongs (and the nation-wide standard). Increasingly popular and becoming ubiquitous are the EU two or three pin (types C, D).

Generally, the late winter weather is pleasant, but it is possible to have anything from driving wind and pelting rain to clear calm sunshine, depending on how intense the periodic cold fronts are (average about 1 per week).
